T-Insight Level One (Secondary)

Immerse beginning teachers in real-life classroom situations to build classroom competence and self-efficacy!

During this course pre-service teachers will develop a range of attributes identified as important for teaching in secondary education classrooms, regardless of their subject specialism. Pre-service teachers will engage with real-life scenarios they are likely to encounter in schools and will receive real-time feedback and suggestions for practice from experienced teachers.



What modules are included?

Module One: Behaviour  Managementconsistent approaches, sanctions and rewards, de-escalating situations, documenting behaviour, grouping students – what do you need to consider? 

Module Two: Adaptive teaching : extension/enrichment activities, teaching gifted and talented students, adapting teaching &  learning by task and outcome, modelling effective learning strategies, engaging students in learning, thinking ‘on your feet.’

Module Three: Time management: managing workload, the pros and cons of taking on extra responsibilities, prioritizing tasks , recognizing the value of feedback for learning, understanding accountability measures.

Module Four: Communicating with students, parents and colleagues: communicating with parents, work-life balance, supporting colleagues, filtering emails, protocols for parent meetings, planning whole school events.




Boosts confidence

This course for secondary teachers is designed to boost confidence and help beginning teachers succeed in the classroom. Teachers respond to a range of video- and text-based scenarios centred around secondary education, in a variety of subject contexts, all in a low-risk environment.

5 scenarios per module

Each module includes five scenarios where teachers view the scenario, rate the appropriateness of three possible responses and write a brief rationale for each. Next, they find out how experienced teachers rated each response and most importantly why.

4 feedback reports

The feedback report at the end of each module will show teachers their overall alignment with experienced teachers and includes resources, readings and ideas for practice.

Here is an example scenario with one possible response and expert feedback:

Scenario: You are teaching a lesson with a year 8 class in a subject you are very familiar with. One student, Nicholas, is  asking questions lots of questions. Nicholas is very curious and you believe he is questioning you because he genuinely wants to learn. The rest of the class are becoming disengaged. What should you do?

Possible response: Acknowledge Nicholas’ enthusiasm but tell him you will discuss his questions with him after the lesson

Expert feedback:

It is important to nurture Nicholas’s enthusiasm and helping to build a student’s interest for your subject area is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.

Make time for Nicholas when it is not at the expense of other learners and provide him with some appropriate extension activities. You could set up an after school club in your subject area which would allow Nicholas to meet learners from other year groups who share similar interests.

Equally, T-Insight supports the acquisition of key teaching behaviours through engagement with authentic scenarios around core topics such as managing behaviour and adaptive teaching.

All of the classroom scenarios included in our products are developed through close partnerships with experienced teachers and educators working in the profession. The scenarios depict classroom situations that teachers have experienced or observed during their careers. As the scenarios are based on real classroom events, participants have the opportunity to critically reflect on how they might respond to a range of challenging situations they may encounter in their own classrooms in a low-risk and supportive environment. Scenarios are designed to be realistic, depicting situations that may happen within a classroom and providing responses that a person may reasonably be expected to do.

Hosting seminars in conjunction with the T-Insight modules is completely optional and depends on your requirements and preferences. However, guided group discussions can be a great way to encourage your students and/or staff to discuss the classroom scenarios and related educational concepts and issues in more depth. We offer resources and seminar guides that you can use to facilitate seminars following each T-Insight module that are designed to a) stimulate discussion amongst participants, b) enable participants to share multiple perspectives of teaching & learning, and c) further build participants’ teaching confidence and classroom readiness.
